What a model leaves out

An earlier essay connected Neo, an exception in a fictional system, with the remainder left by a mathematical approximation. The connection is an imaginative analogy: it offers a question to explore, not a proof about the film.

A way to read the idea

A Taylor polynomial describes a function near a chosen point using a finite collection of terms. The remainder measures the difference between that approximation and the function. That difference depends on the function, the point, and the order of approximation. It can be zero; adding terms does not guarantee convergence everywhere.

The useful idea for this essay is modest: when a model misses something, study the mismatch. It may reveal a limit in the model, a missing condition, or a question we have not yet asked. It does not automatically prove that the model is wrong in every setting.
