Choice and the system
The Matrix began as a film to revisit and became a way to ask questions about learning, rules, and human choice. These notes return to one question: how much can a system understand about the people living inside it?
A way to read the idea
The Architect offers a useful starting point for a reading of the film. His explanations try to make human behavior legible as a system. Neo makes the question personal: a decision also has meaning for the person who must live with it. This is our interpretation of the story, rather than an explanation of the filmmakers’ intentions.
In a classroom, a rule can describe what usually happens without telling us everything about a particular learner. A score can be useful and still leave out a question, a hesitation, or an unexpected connection. The point is to ask what a description helps us see—and what it leaves outside the frame.
